[Peace Conference] BanFGM Conference on the global ban on female genital mutilation, Rome, Italy
Ms. Nam Hee Kim was invited to the conference organized by No Peace Without Justice and the Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children with the political and financial support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Islamic Development Bank and Amref. The conference was held in Rome, Italy for three days from January 30 to February 01, 2017.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) is all procedures involving partial or total removal of the female external genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). Also, UN Sustainable Development Goals in 2015 calls for an end to FGM by 2030 under Goal 5 on Gender Equality, Target 5.3 Eliminate all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation.
Excerpts from Ms. Nam Hee Kim's Speech
" Let us all have courage, and win the battle to eradicate FGM. Eradicating FGM is a symbol of women’s rights globally. Eventually, the goal must be to make the law take full effect and to help people understand that FGM is a brutal act of crime. As long as FGM takes place, sexual inequality will persist. And there will be no true freedom for women and girls around the world. "
