IWPG Chairwoman Na-Yeong Jeon Wins Peace Culture Promotion Award in Mexico

Jeon Na Yeong, Chairwoman of International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG), received a Recognition Award for Humanitarian Action and Promotion of a Culture of Peace award by the Juárez Autonomous University of Tabasco (UJAT) in Mexico. The award ceremony took place at 9 a.m. local time on November 21 during the opening ceremony of IV International Interdisciplinary Congress of Gender Studies and Violence Prevention, held in the Lic. Eduardo Alday Hernández auditorium. Jasmine Yoo, Manager of International Affairs of IWPG Global Region 10, accepted the award on behalf of Chairwoman Jeon.
This year’s event was organized by the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities of UJAT to commemorate the university’s 67th anniversary, and brought together more than 350 participants under the theme of “Neuroscience and Emotional Intelligence: Building a Sustainable Culture of Peace for Violence Prevention.” In addition to Chairwoman Jeon, other honorees included notary Enma Estela Hernández Domínguez, former UJAT rector Candita Victoria Gil Jiménez, and DACEA professor Olga Yeri González López.
The ‘Recognition Award for Humanitarian Action and Promotion of a Culture of Peace’ is presented to individuals or institutions that have contributed to the promotion of a culture of peace. Last year, the recipients included Dr. María Elósegui, a judge at the European Court of Human Rights, and Dr. Guadalupe Cano, the first woman to lead the Judiciary of the state of Tabasco. IWPG Chairwoman Jeon was recognized for her contributions to advancing peace through women’s organizations and for promoting international peace education.

“I am truly honored to receive such a meaningful award,” Chairwoman Jeon said, adding, “This recognition reflects the significant results of IWPG’s peace education efforts and women’s rights initiatives across Mexico and the Latin American region. I will continue to advance initiatives that empower women in Latin America to take on leading roles in building peace.”
On the same day, IWPG Global Region 10 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with UJAT to expand cooperation in peace education. Through this agreement, UJAT will become the first institution in Mexico to introduce IWPG women’s peace education (PLTE) into its undergraduate curriculum. The signing ceremony was attended by Jasmine Yoo from IWPG and the rector of UJAT, with the director of the Women’s Studies Institute and the head of the Social Sciences and Humanities Academic Division also present.
The UJAT Peace Committee inauguration ceremony was also held. Professor Ivonne Adriana Gaytán Bertruy was appointed as the representative of the committee, and seven members including faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students were appointed as founding members. The Peace Committee is expected to expand to all 12 academic divisions in the future.

UATJ announced that 50 students have already completed the General Course of PLTE. The program is delivered through lectures by Korean instructors with Spanish interpretation and is designed to be applicable throughout the broader Latin American region.
The International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) is a women’s NGO registered with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC). It has 115 branches in 122 countries and works with more than 800 partner organizations. With the vision of “realizing sustainable world peace,” IWPG carries out activities such as expanding solidarity, spreading a culture of peace, providing women’s peace education, and supporting the legislation of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW).
