This Month’s Interview

Monk Jaewon

Republic of Korea

Belonging to the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, Cheondungsa Temple

IWPG Daegu Branch Peace Committee Representative

1. First, please introduce yourself.

I am the head monk of Cheondung Temple belonging to the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and my name is Jaewon. As a religious person who pursues peace, I became involved with the International Women`s Peace Group (IWPG) and am currently working as a Peace Committee Representative in the Daegu branch.

2. As a religious person, what is peace?

The peace I think begins with oneself (mountain buddha). As the saying goes, ‘Restoring the body, reigning in peace,’ I believe that peace in the family, society, nation, and even the world can be achieved only when one is at peace first. And if you look at the Chinese character for ‘peace’, it means “a state when grain goes to everyone equally.” Although it is such a small part, I also practice peace by serving a warm meal to everyone who visits the temple.

3. As a graduate of the 2020 Daegu Branch 1st PLTE, please tell us about your impressions and how you have changed after receiving the PLTE.

Every human being wants peace, not war.

I understand that the times have changed, and religious and civil society organizations are doing a lot of peace activities. However, through IWPG`s PLTE, I learned what the cause of war was and what the solution was to end war, and I think this education served as a guide for me as a Peace Committee Representative. Because thoughts and lives change through education, we must look back on what kind of education we are receiving now. Is it an education for peace or an education to prepare for a war that destroys everything?

I believe that PLTE was an education that made the wish for the realization of peace, which everyone had vaguely thought in their hearts, visible, and planted the thoughts and minds that can transform them into true leaders of peace.

Therefore, I believe that this education is a must-attend course for IWPG peace members and an education that all women around the world should participate in.

4. As the Peace Committee Representative, what are some peace projects you would like to do with IWPG this year?

Currently, the Peace Committee is held every month, but there are difficulties in the process of understanding each other, dedication, and harmony. So, first, I would like to exchange harmony through sincere communication with the peace members.

In addition, I would like to first visit the workplaces of the members and socialize and to create a good place of communication so that IWPG can be promoted to those who visit the workplace. And gradually make it so that the customers and acquaintances who visit can join as peace members.

5. What do you think is the driving force behind continuing to work on women and peace?

We believe that education is the driving force behind tireless peace activities for sustainable peace. Education broadens awareness of peace and motivates peace activities so that they can be put into action.

And I believe that by consistently participating in IWPG regular meetings, you can cultivate your mind for peace and develop your thinking skills. If more women actively participate in peace education and the formation and spreading of a culture of peace and come together as one mind, I believe that the peace that everyone desires can be realized more quickly with the power of women.

6. What do you think about the progress of IWPG, which is steadily growing despite the situation of COVID-19 under the slogan of IWPG in 2023, “Strengthening Global Women`s Partnership for Sustainable Peace”?

I have been with IWPG for 7 years already. The IWPG I saw is growing steadily even in the situation of COVID-19 and is surprisingly active in peace activities. Although I am a religious person, I have learned and felt that peace has nothing to do with race, nationality, or religion. I believe that if all 3.9 billion women around the world unite and unite to achieve peace, just like the vision of IWPG, maternal love will become a weapon more powerful than any other weapon and will surely leave a legacy of peace to future generations. We support the realization of peace through the infinite growth of IWPG in 2023 and the practical participation of more women. WE ARE ONE!!!
