Manila I July Update
2026.08.19
Following the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed in January 2026, the IWPG Manila Branch and Leyte Normal University officially launched the Philippines' first university-based Peace Leadership Training and Education (PLTE) program on July 8, 2026, welcoming 30 faculty members to its inaugural session. This historic initiative marks the beginning of a pioneering partnership to integrate peace education into higher education, empowering educators to become leaders in fostering a culture of peace within their classrooms, institutions, and communities.
The PLTE session was met with enthusiastic participation as the trainees actively engaged in discussions, asked thoughtful questions, and shared personal reflections on the lessons. One participant emphasized that fostering a culture of peace is a shared responsibility that must be passed on as a lasting legacy for future generations. Participants also appreciated the interactive activities, particularly the Group Cheer and Inner Peace Law presentations, describing them as enjoyable and meaningful learning experiences. Many faculty members expressed their commitment to applying the peace values in their classrooms and contributing to a more peaceful school community.
SEOUL, Republic of Korea — IWPG hosted the Global Women's Peace Forum online over two days beginning July 20, bringing together 1,067 women from four regions around the world. Participants from the Asia-Pacific, Africa and Europe, the Americas, and South Asia and the Middle East examined region-specific security challenges and the structural barriers limiting women's leadership, while proposing practical measures for sustainable peace.
In her opening remarks, IWPG President Na-young Jeon emphasized the importance of listening to women who experience local challenges firsthand. "Women living in each community understand the challenges they face better than anyone else," Jeon said. "If we truly want sustainable peace, we must shorten the distance between local realities and global decision-making. And the first step is to listen to the voices of women who are living those realities every day."
Jeon added that IWPG would work to ensure that the diverse peace proposals developed by women in different regions are conveyed to the international community.
Representing the Philippines, Atty. Melanie Lambino, Member of the board of the National Federation of Women's Clubs of the Philippines, highlighted the structural barriers that continue to limit women's participation in decision-making and emphasized that women's voices are indispensable in achieving lasting peace. As she aptly stated, "Peace is the presence of equality, justice, safety, and understanding."
