Sydney I October Update
2026.11.04
In October 2026, IWPG Sydney representatives attended Building Bridges 2026: Re-connect — Belonging to Country, hosted by Reconciliation for Western Sydney at Uniting Church, Wentworthville, on Darug Country. Bringing together First Nations Elders, speakers and community members, the event explored connection to Country, truth-telling, truth-listening and meaningful action towards reconciliation.
Through personal stories and panel discussions, speakers highlighted the lasting impacts of historical injustices, the importance of preserving cultural identity and the shared responsibility to care for Country. Uncle Ray introduced the concept of ‘solastalgia’, reflecting the emotional impact of environmental changes, while Mr Joshua Staines emphasised the need for practical action to protect landscapes and waterways for future generations.
Ms. Maria Maguire from Western Sydney Reconciliation spoke as the event MC.

For IWPG, participating in this event was an important step in strengthening relationships with the First Nations community and developing a deeper understanding of their history, cultural identity and aspirations. By engaging directly with Elders and community representatives, IWPG recognises that meaningful peacebuilding begins with listening, acknowledging different lived experiences and building trust through ongoing dialogue. These connections also provide opportunities to identify shared values and areas for future collaboration, particularly in promoting mutual respect, community wellbeing and intergenerational understanding.
The insights gained will inform IWPG's approach to peace education and community engagement in Australia. In particular, IWPG representatives connected with Susan Moylan-Coombs and Uncle Ray to discuss opportunities for future collaboration in peacebuilding and truth-telling. Susan expressed strong interest in meeting with IWPG for further discussions and expressed openness to collaborate any relevant initiatives. These new form connections provide a foundation for continued dialogue and future joint initiatives that amplify First Nations voices, promote awareness of historical experiences and foster reconciliation.
