“We Want a Society Free from Drugs and Violence”: March for Peace in Lautoka, Fiji

Voices calling for a community free from drugs and violence rang out on the streets of Lautoka, Fiji.

The Lautoka Branch of the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG), led by Branch Manager Nina Naivalu, took part in a street march promoting drug and violence prevention in Lautoka on September 26, sharing a message of peace with the local community.

The march aimed to raise awareness of the dangers of drugs, substance abuse, and violence in Fijian society, while highlighting the need to protect victims and develop practical measures to address these issues.

A total of 30 people participated, including Branch Manager Nina Naivalu, Branch Secretary Luziane Rai, IWPG members, and local children. The march was officially authorized by the Lautoka City Council and proceeded with the protection and guidance of local police. Participants walked through the streets to raise public awareness of the importance of preventing drug abuse and violence.

Participants chanted, “Say no to drugs, choose life, and stand for peace.” They conveyed the message that rejecting drugs and violence is essential not only to individual well-being but also to the safety and peace of the wider community. They also called on local leaders to protect victims and take more proactive measures.

Through this activity, the IWPG Lautoka Branch highlighted the importance of community engagement in addressing drug and violence-related issues and creating a peaceful environment. The branch plans to continue working with the local community to promote and put the values of peace into practice.
