April 26: A Day for Women to Embrace the Power of Everyday Peace — KUGASAKA WEB TV
2026.04.26

In today’s world, even starting the morning by checking the news can feel overwhelming. Our screens are often filled with reports of ongoing conflicts and the devastating impact of violence on women and children. The suffering experienced in distant places does not remain far away; it eventually reaches our own lives, shaping our sense of security, stability, and even our economies.
Last month, on March 8, we marked International Women’s Day. Yet as a peace advocate, I have come to a more sobering understanding: human rights can be fragile, easily shaken by the forces of war. This reality reminds us of the urgent need for a deeper and more sustainable approach to peacebuilding.
Peace is often imagined as a distant, ideal end state—a condition in which all conflict has disappeared. However, peace is not merely an outcome; it is a continuous process, much like wealth that is built through steady effort over time.
The everyday choices women make—raising children with care, resolving conflicts within communities, and nurturing life with compassion—may appear ordinary, yet they form the very foundation of social stability and global security.
April 26 is recognized as International Women’s Peace Day, a moment to honor this concept of “everyday peace” and to acknowledge women as key drivers of positive change. Historically, this date carries painful associations, including the 1937 bombing that inspired Picasso’s Guernica and the 1986 nuclear disaster. Today, however, we are transforming this day from one of tragedy into a symbol of hope—one where women actively sow the seeds of a more peaceful future.
I deeply resonate with the expression “a mother’s heart,” often used by the International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG). It reflects a natural and powerful instinct to protect and preserve life. For women, peace is not simply an abstract concept to be studied; it is an inherent value—an instinctive respect for life that already exists within us.
Peace begins within each of us. This April 26, let us move beyond the traditional narrative of women as victims, and instead embrace our role as active creators of peace who cultivate hope in the world.
