Human Beings Are Small in the Face of Nature — Yang Eun-hye
2026.10.06

“The one thing we can do is love one another.”
On the morning of August 26, 2026, a massive glacier collapsed in the Himalayan mountain region near the border between Nepal and China’s Tibet, causing severe flooding. News that countless residents had lost their lives or gone missing weighed heavily on all of our hearts that day.
On the 11th day after the disaster, I heard the news that a person had been found alive beneath the mud. To save that one life, people used their hands to clear away the earth and make more space, while others hurried to prepare a stretcher. In their efforts, we can see many different forms of love.
If I had been there, what could I have done? Perhaps I would have held their hand warmly, looked into their eyes, and encouraged them by saying, “We’re going to get through this together. You can do it. Stay strong.”
A life on the verge of death is someone’s child. The person who offers that life water and the person who clears away the earth to make room may not be related by blood, but each is someone’s family in their own way. We are all the same.
A world where even a small act of kindness toward another person can give them strength—that is the kind of world I hope we can create. That is how, even in the midst of hardship, we can find hope and live on. I wish that everyone could live that way.
And yet, somewhere else on this earth, people who are so small and powerless in the face of nature are pointing guns and knives at one another, fighting because they want to have more. What, exactly, are they fighting for?
It feels as though we can hear the voice of nature asking: Why are you fighting, and what do you hope to gain by fighting?
Within the single body we call Earth, when one part is hurting, I hope we will care for one another. And when one part is at peace, I hope we will spread the seeds of that peace far and wide. Perhaps one day, those seeds will grow into a beautiful garden of peace in full bloom.
